Unplanned Pregnancy – Making a Decision

For many, this is not an easy decision. There are countless factors that need to be considered. If you’re feeling daunted and don’t really know where to start, assessing your situation and trying to remain objective, in what can be a very emotional time, is a good start.

There are essentially three decisions that every pregnant woman or couple will need to consider when they find out they’re expecting. Beliefs, values, practicality and timing are all contributing factors that can affect the decision-making process. Whatever your decision, it’s essential that you consider how it aligns with your own values and beliefs. In a time of such emotional turmoil, it can be very easy to be influenced by others. Considering what is right for you is paramount.

While ensuring that the decision is yours, it’s important to welcome the support of family and friends throughout the decision-making process. If they are a solid support network for you, their strength is a huge benefit.

Some questions you might like to ask yourself, to help gain some clarity are;

  • How do I feel about this pregnancy?
  • Do I want to be a parent?
  • Could I parent on my own?
  • Does my partner want a child/another child?
  • Will I be able to give a child a secure and happy life?
  • Could I give up a baby after carrying it to term?
  • Am I happy to change my lifestyle?
  • Would I always wonder where my child was if adopted?
  • Which of the 3 options; termination parenting, adoption align with my values?

Once you have considered how you feel about each of the 3 options, it’s important to do your research and understand exactly what each process involves. Understanding the stages of pregnancy, childbirth, adoption and termination can be daunting and overwhelming so, again, ensuring you have the support of loved ones is vital.

A careful and educated decision will ensure that the road you take with your pregnancy, is the best path for you. Consider each option carefully. No one else knows which solution is best better than you.
