An unplanned pregnancy is an extremely stressful situation for any woman, and women must have access to the options and support they deserve to make the right choice for themselves.

Abortion in Sydney, when carried out by a specialist medical provider, is a common and safe method of ending a pregnancy. Gynaecology Centres Australia operates at five locations in NSW and the ACT, including our Sydney abortion clinic. This clinic provides first trimester abortions (also known as pregnancy terminations).

The majority of our patients undergo a surgical abortion; we do also offer medical abortions in certain cases for women whose pregnancy is at 9 weeks gestation or less.

What to Expect - Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion in Sydney is carried out in our Hurstville clinic. Patients are with us for 3-4 hours

  1. A simple questionnaire will be completed, and comprehensive information about abortion will be given.
  2. A consultation with the doctor will take place, during which medical history is taken and an ultrasound is performed to confirm the gestational stage of the pregnancy.
  3. Pregnancy-decision- making counselling will be provided, if required, and options discussed.
  4. Should you wish to proceed with the abortion (and there is no obligation to do so) an anaesthetic will be administered.
  5. The abortion procedure is quick and safe. The medications used will induce a sleepy state and you tend not remember anything about the process, nor will you feel any discomfort.
  6. You will remain in the clinic for at least an hour before going home; you may have one support person with you during this time.
  7. Instructions for aftercare will be given, as well as an antibiotic and painkillers if deemed necessary.

Patients will be unable to drive after the procedure and you will need a support person to pick you up and escort you home.

Medical Abortion

Women whose pregnancy is at 9 weeks (63 days) gestation or less may be eligible to undergo a medical abortion. We also offer this as a solution for some women who consult with us from remote locations.

A medical abortion involves taking medication to end the pregnancy. The woman must undergo an ultrasound before proceeding to confirm the pregnancy is not ectopic and also that it is no later than 9 weeks.

Tablets are taken in two stages:

  1. The first tablet ends the pregnancy, stopping the embryo from growing.
  2. The second tablet is taken 36-48 hours after the first, and it begins a miscarriage to expel the pregnancy tissue from the uterus.

The second stage takes several hours and involves some pain and bleeding, and it must be timed so that, ideally, another adult can be present for support.

Vaginal bleeding will likely continue for about 2 weeks, similar to a period.
