What is an IUD Insertion?

IUD insertion is a highly effective, reversible form of contraception. At our Hurstville clinic, the procedure is performed with IV sedation to ensure minimal discomfort. You may choose between a hormonal or non-hormonal device, depending on your personal preference and health needs. The actual insertion only takes a few minutes, followed by a brief 30–60 minute recovery period at the clinic. Full aftercare guidance is provided before you leave. You are required to bring the IUD with you so that must be organised beforehand, through your GP.

What to Expect During Your Visit

We aim to make your visit to our Sydney clinic as smooth and reassuring as possible. Here’s how your appointment typically unfolds:

Consultation

Your appointment begins with a private consultation with our doctor. Our doctor will review your medical history, confirm your IUD device, and explain the sedation and insertion process, including potential complications.

The Procedure

Your IUD will be inserted under IV sedation by our highly trained medical practitioner in a purpose-built procedure room. The procedure is brief, and you are carefully monitored by our qualified medical team.

Recovery

After the procedure, you’ll be taken to our recovery area, where you’ll rest for approximately 30–60 minutes. Before discharge, you’ll receive aftercare instructions and guidance from our qualified medical team.

Sedation and Safety

At GCA Sydney, your well-being is our highest priority. Our sedation services are delivered by qualified sedationists (trained medical practitioners)  in a medically monitored setting. We follow strict protocols to ensure your safety throughout the procedure. If you have any concerns or questions about sedation, our team is here to provide reassurance and support.

How to Prepare for IUD Insertion

To ensure a smooth appointment at our Hurstville clinic, please refer to the following dot points.

Following these steps helps us deliver the safest and most comfortable care possible.

  • Avoid eating for 6 hours prior to your visit (you may drink water until 2 hours before)
  • Bring your IUD, previously prescribed by a doctor and obtained from your local pharmacy
  • Bring a list of current medications and relevant medical history, and advise us at the time of making the appointment about any medical history, and let us know what medications you may be taking.
  • Organise a responsible adult to accompany you home (you will be unable to drive post-sedation or take public transport)

IUD Insertion Cost

There is no additional charge for IV sedation (if you have a valid Medicare card). Overall costs may vary depending on your personal circumstances and the type of IUD selected. The IUDs are bought separately from the pharmacy and a prescription is required. For detailed information, please visit our IUD Information Page or contact our Hurstville clinic directly.
